{"id":89,"date":"2012-09-23T21:50:32","date_gmt":"2012-09-24T04:50:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/smugscout.com\/?p=89"},"modified":"2012-09-29T20:20:43","modified_gmt":"2012-09-30T03:20:43","slug":"smug-baked-goods-in-portland-maine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/smugscout.com\/?p=89","title":{"rendered":"Smug baked goods in Portland, Maine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-90\" title=\"Standard Baking Co\" src=\"http:\/\/smugscout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_5447-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/smugscout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_5447-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/smugscout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_5447-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/smugscout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_5447-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Portland, Maine is one of this country&#8217;s most cherished Smug epicenters and as such one of Smug Scout&#8217;s favorite places for a vacation. \u00a0As you would expect, Portland has plenty of Smug businesses where it is possible to spend large amounts of money on the correct things to eat, drink, wear, and showcase in your house. \u00a0The Standard Baking Co. even sets the gold standard, so to speak, for Smug products in Portland. \u00a0Let us consider the most obvious Smug factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exclusive bread purveyor for Fore Street, Portland&#8217;s epicenter of Smug dining (and Smug Scout&#8217;s favorite restaurant in New England!)<\/li>\n<li>Predictably &#8220;rehabilitated&#8221; factory with showy bricks, concrete, and steel<\/li>\n<li>Nondescript, non-whimsical name\u00a0meant to evoke\u00a0old Americana<\/li>\n<li>Native plants in non-native pots flanking entrance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course a city like Portland surely has hundreds of businesses with these Smug New England attributes, so you must be wondering what makes Standard Baking Co. so uniquely Smug. In fact, it is because you need to be fluent in multiple European languages to understand the offerings. If you want bread, you do not order a loaf, you order a <em>boule<\/em>. If you want that small oblong chocolate cake, you call it a <em>bouchon<\/em>. If you want that pretty nectarine tart, you call it a<em> frangipane.<\/em>\u00a0If you do not know <em>ficelle<\/em>, <em>epi<\/em>, <em>galette<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>financier<\/em>, just pronounce the name\u00a0with\u00a0a native accent\u00a0and learn what it is by eating it. If <em>Normandy<\/em> means nothing to you as a type of\u00a0<em>pain<\/em>, do not ask and do not be intimidated. Just trust Smug Scout and casually ask if the apples are local. Extra points if you pompously announce you will be serving it with single source artisanal Calvados from a private c<em>h\u00e2teau<\/em> distillery. You will silence the Smug Cashier, a rare accomplishment. <a href=\"http:\/\/smugscout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_5446.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-91\" title=\"IMG_5446\" src=\"http:\/\/smugscout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_5446-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/smugscout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_5446-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/smugscout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_5446-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/smugscout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_5446-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Smug Scout does get chills, though, when she imagines what would happen if she did not know the proper way to order. Picture this nightmarish scenario:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Smug Cashier: Next?<\/li>\n<li>Smug Scout: Hi, I&#8217;d like to start with two of those breadsticks with cheese.<\/li>\n<li>Smug Cashier: We do not carry breadsticks with cheese.<\/li>\n<li>Smug Scout [pointing at breadstick with cheese looking thing]: Well, what&#8217;s that?<\/li>\n<li>Smug Cashier: That is a Fougasse with Asiago.<\/li>\n<li>Smug Scout: Fine, give me <em>deux<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Smug Cashier: Anything else?<\/li>\n<li>Smug Scout: Yes, a piece of gingerbread.<\/li>\n<li>Smug Cashier: We do not carry gingerbread.
